I'm an animation student now and I'm planning to buy Carrara Pro 5. I'd like to get the academic version while I'm still a student, but I've read you can't use some academic versions for commercial use. How can I find out exactly what I'm able to do with it?

Go to the store or the website and read the software license agreement. It will tell you the limits of the academic use license.

My daughter entered middle school this year and is being asked to type reports for the first time. What grade would a student be able to be to qualify for the academic edition of MS Office?

there really is no age requirement. Anyone who is under 18 is automaticly eligible, after that you may need to prove your a student but probally not. I think it puts a line at the bottom of the printed pages that says "student version"

You may want to check out open office, its free and will work great for your daughter's school reports.

What is the difference between the Academic version software and the commercial versions of products.

Taking MS Office Student and Teacher as an example, the base products are the same as the commercial package though the Commercial may have some bells and whistles extra (which invariably you don’t need). However watch the mix of items in a package which may vary; e.g. you may not have Outlook in the academic with Word, Excel and Powerpoint whereas you probably would in Commercial. Just check the content spec’ carefully.
The companies make it affordable because they want you to become familiar with/dependent on their product so that you will take it out into the business world where they charge the full license. If they change the product much it’s self defeating.
The academic licenses are much cheaper but specify that you can only use it while you are a student / teacher etc. When you move on you should by a new full license ;o).

I bought and indesign cs3 software straight from school cause it was required by the course. It was never registered and even installed. But I recently acquired a full Adobe package from my family as a gift. Why isn't there so many buying an academic software? Also if can be sold where is the best place to sell it. I tried looking at ebay but I'm afraid of some legality that may come with it.

if you purchased the program legally and it has a product key with it…there is no reason why you can't sell it…..

I am a staff member at a private US university, and I was wondering if I can purchase and legally use academic software for my home computer? More so, can I use Vista, Office, and Photoshop products that are academic versions legally even though I will do more personal things on the computer at home?

Check the box for the licensing information. Usually they say something like students and faculty. If the box doesn't give guidance you can contact the vendor directly.

Several years ago (late 1990s) I talked directly to MicroSoft about a similar situation. My wife worked for the state's department of education. She had been a teacher, but wasn't anymore.

The person I talked to told me that there weren't any hard and fast restrictions on it and that they would let me make the call.
