I currently use Google Analytics, and I want to track the return visitors from my PPC campaigns from Google Adwords & Yahoo Search Marketing. For example, when someone clicks on an ad, do they come back to my site?

The system that measure's a user's lifetime value is only as good as the data that can be captured.

If you have the technology to store cookies on your user's machines, store a cookie that expires after a long period of time (60-90 days) with the original source of the user and a number value that you can increment to count the number of return sessions by that user.

Check for the cookie values on page load, increment the count for the number of visits. Pass these values through to your checkout/thankyou page to find the total revenue that single user has generated.

The adverts are not related to the page content. It only seems to happen on the first page of my site. Do i have to setup some meta data or something to help the Adwords system?

Heya,

First question, are you using Google adwords? If so, there are a few potential issues.

1: You just posted the code onto your page and Google has yet to index the content on the site to determine relevant content yet. If this has happened, you'll either see ads showing up in Japanese, or you'll see PSA's or you'll see some non-relevant ads popping up on the page. Unfortunately, the solution to this is just to wait for Google to see the content on the page.

If you want to focus on getting the right ads with particular content on the page, Try using section targetting. This will tell Google only to display ads from the content contained in this code:

<!– google_ad_section_start –>

<!– google_ad_section_end –>

If you want to make sure Google doesnt display ads from a particular section of the content, use the following code:
<!– google_ad_section_start(weight=ignore) –>

Most of the other search engines, like Yahoo have a similar trial period where they get to know your site and serve relevant ads. Since you specifically said "adwords" I'm assuming you're using Google.

Hope this helps.
