Amazon Herb Could Capture Public’s Imagination
Any ideas as to where abouts in the amazon is good.. we looked at cruises but they all seem so dear, so any cheaper suggestions are appreciated… Ive found a couple of hostels in Manaus.. would this allow us to experience the amazon, but going there, and doing our own thing? any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Yes,Manaus is the best known(but not the only) place to go to arrange transportation on the rivers. It is a very large city and so you should also be able to find anything there that you might need or may have lost or forgotten. Contrary to popular belief all travel is not always on the Amazon and you will probably use several other rivers and tributaries within the "Amazon Basin".Manaus,I believe, is actually on the Rio Negro.
The cruises and prices you are reading about are on large well equipped tourist boats.A/C, marine toilets, fulls size beds, with someone to prepare and serve you your meals etc. There are many different types of boats available with fares and fees that are nowhere near what the bigger boats charge. You should have no trouble finding inexpensive transportation on the river if you can live and travel like the local people. The links below have some excellent tips and information and also show good examples of the smaller local boats that I am speaking of. In my opinion, they are much more fun than riding in a glass enclosed, temperature controlled cabin with people dressed in matching $500 safari outfits from LL Bean.
Bring your own hammocks, mosquito netting, food and water etc and you too can travel the rivers like/with the locals. You will see the same things(probably more)and go the same places as the big tourist boats for a fraction of their price.
I would strongly advise you to read as much as possible about independent travel on the Amazon and to learn as much survival Spanish and Portuguese as you can before you travel. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions.

On the Amazons, Or, the Cruise of “The Rambler”: As Recorded by Wash
How can I cancel an unwanted, unrequested "booking"?
I was looking @ cruises of South America and was notified I was booked to an Amazon cruise (completely unwanted).
Send them a letter, describing the problem and threaten legal action if they do not remove you from the list. Next time, don't give your name out unless you are actually trying to buy or reserve something.

Anyone know a good tour operator in Ecuador? Cruises or tours in Galapagos and Amazon?
Im traveling to Ecuador in a couple of weeks, I was wondering if anyone knows a good traveling company. I want to go to Quito, Galapagos and Amazon Jungle…
Hi there, I was there a couple of months ago and I asked the exact same question to my hotel and some friends. The most recommended one was this one called ec travel. They offer about everything you can think of in Ecuador, cruises, scuba diving, mountain climbing, birdwatching, and in Galapagos they are one of the best ones.
I think their website still misses some info, but contact them if you want, they are great with customer service.

I love Peru! I went with my Dad a couple of years ago. I have not been to the Amazon, so I can't help with that.
All year is beautiful in Peru, so if you only can go at one time, do it! Also, when you go to Machu Pichu, hire a guide at the front gate. It is worth having a tour of the different locations. You can easily get lost at the site. Bring an offering to the site- some people bring coca plants, but I wish I had brought some flowers. It isn't something tourists do, but I think it is respectful and it feels right- to leave something there in a place so old and incredible.
As for the best time, I went in September and it was great. It was the off season and prices were great.
Have fun!

Science Chapters :Amazon Journey

Adventure abounds as the reader journeys deep into the rainforest, a setting alive with danger and teeming with exotic wildlife.
I have never been there (yet!), but I know that the temperatures are milder during the winter months. You should probably avoid the (very) rainy season (summer) when everything floods. but you should try to find out exactly what months that happens, so you can plan better. A travel agency might be able to help you. Or look for any website about the Amazon. Try google-ing something like "Amazon rain season".
