What are the advantages of having a american express credit card?
How does it work?
Is it hard to get?
Thanks!
American Express is accepted in certain U.S. luxury establishments exclusively such as Neiman Marcus and Costco Wholesale and widely in Europe. Walgreen's is one of the few large businesses that do not take AMEX along with a few Broadway theatres in favor of VISA and/or MasterCard.
These type of cards with the exception of Blue and the Costco TrueEarnings do not have pre-set spending limits, which doesn't look good on you credit reports since the highest balance will become your credit limit., For example, if you charge $50.00 and the billing statement closes with that amount, AMEX will reports that activity/balance but the credit bureaus will assume that is your credit limit.
Also, if you rent your residence, you have higher chances of NOT getting approved, regardless of your creditworthiness. To apply for a AMEX card, you need to have a FICO score of at least 715 with no negative information, and no more than 3-credit inquiries in the last 3-months. And you must have not been decline credit by AMEX within the last 6-months.
Another important thing you need to be aware of is if you charge your credit card with high amounts within the first 6-months, they will place your account in a "possible fraud alert" this mean that they will be asking you shortly for a financial review in which they demand from you 4-full bank statements, 2 past W-2s, 2-past 1040s, 4-pay stubs, birth certificate and a photocopy of your identification card or driver's license.
All documents must be faxed within 48-hours of the request or they will close your account and report it as "Close per creditor" Not bad, ah?

I have not been able to find any banks that offer secure credit cards. Does anyone have any suggestions, or any personal experiences?
I travel a lot between CA and USA and having an american credit cards will be a lot more easier than carrying cash all the time…
P.S: I don’t have a good credit score either
If you don’t have an American address you can’t get an American credit card because of the patriot act. Credit card companies need to be able to verify name, address, date of birth and social security number/tax id.
I second the pre-paid cards. Or Traveler’s Checks.

Buying an item online from a website that only sell in japanese yen. does visa or other american credit cards work.
Credit card numbers are international. It doesn't matter if you are in the US, or overseas, or on the Internet. The only difference is when you receive the bill, they will convert the yen to buckaroo's.

I worked in the USA and obtained the credit card while in the USA. I now live in Canada and have a Canadian credit card as well. I had planned to cancel the American card but the bank does not mind that I live in Canada so my husband wants to keep the card and use it when we travel to the USA. I wonder if this is wise or foolish.
I live in Canada and winter in the USA. I have both USA credit cards and Canadian credit cards.
When you use a Canadian card in the US you are charged not only for the exchange rate but also a fee for each trans action anywhere from $1.25 to $4 or $5 dollars depending on the amount charged and where.
Of course it works the other way when you use a US card in Canada.
Keep both countries cards and you will be ahead in the long run. They don't mind you having a US card in Canada just watch your due dates and adjust them so you don't have late fees on top of the rest. It takes about 9 to 12 days for the mail to go each way. Also for some reason American companies do not understand postal codes and some aren't even set up for them so that can also cause a problem.

I live in Canada. Does anyone know whether if it's possible for me to have an American Credit card registered under an American address? I do have a U.S. postal box, but no U.S. bank account. If it is possible, can anyone provide me with any tips in getting a credit card?
It's mainly for online shopping. The problem arises when I provide the retailer with my credit card number but the billing address is Canadian. And a lot of sites can't take Canadian billing addresses.
Do you want a US credit card just so you can shop in USD?
Most of the Canadian Banks have US dollar denominated credit products. I have one through mine. There will be a small annual fee in most cases, like $20.
Also if you deal in Canada with RBC, I'd seriously suggest you look at their RBC Centura operation. They have accounts specifically designed for Canadians who want US based bank accounts and credit products.
