My Granda has been diagnosed with lung cancer and asbestos in both lungs, he also has a tumour in his stomach. The doctor has told him there is nothing he can do for him and there is no treatment that would really help. Its really quite annoying because the doctor said it was only a small tumour that was benign and now today he is practically saying he is going to die very soon. They said they`ll be able to give a certain time, how long he has to live on monday! Why cant they tell that just now?
! Can anyone explain the stages of lung cancer, i know theres different types… well if you arent receiving treatment how bad does it get?!
Yeah well thats why i asked the question, im not looking for false hope. I guess every cancer patient is different and it just depends on the stage of disease and such…….
It really depends how far its gone. I’m sorry to hear this hun - sometimes best is quicker. Asbestos isn’t a very nice diease and I think it can cause the cancer also- really horrible. He’ll get what is called palative care. It consists of pain relief, comfort, psycological help and support, and hopefully allowing people to be at peace and comfortable before they die. Some go into Hospice, which also helps. I had a patient come in once for a cough and it was discovered she was covered in cancer all through her lungs, it was horrible but she came to accept it and died peacefully. She probably died in about 6 months. She was very short of breath, and in some pain, but she wasn’t affected mentally and still managed to smile for us. She actually didn’t seem to be on much pain when I saw her in hospital (she was having chest x-rays pretty much every 2 days) so I guess thats part of the control. All us radiographers loved her haha. Obviously I havent seen your Grandads x-rays so I don’t know, but listen to the docs- they always do their best. I know next to nothing about stomach tumours cos we don’t x-ray for it so I can’t really help there, but again, they’ll make him as comfortable as possible. I really hope ur Ok and wish you all the best, luv ya lots, and hope Rafa wins for ya!

Asbestos we all know can cause Lung Cancer as you get older but has anyone been diagnosed at an earlier age like 45 or younger. Has anyone heard about Asbestos in Ironing Board Covers? I read an article stating that Ironing Board Covers has a trace of Asbestos in the materials used. Should we be alarmed? Should we throw away all ironing boards and if so, how will we iron our clothes besides using a steam iron? Please help with this difficult solution. I am a bit worried about Asbestos which could be no different than the toxic in the air that can cause Lung Cancer. Any critizm is accepted. Yes, I am a worry-wart. Go easy with your answers and no, I am not like Chicken Little..lol
Asbestos does indeed cause a rare form of lung disease called mesothelioma. It is because of the nature of the extremely small fibers that make up asbestos. Once the loose fibers are inhaled the stay in the lungs for years as a constant irritant to the lungs, and eventually cancer results. In the past asbestos was used in everything from brake shoes, to window putty, to pipe insulation and more. It was used because of its ability to withstand high temps. The real problem is when the fibers are loose like when the wheels of a car are removed and the dust is inhaled, or when the insulation of an old building is flaking and the fibers are loose and can be inhaled, this is the real danger. As long as the asbestos is intact and the fibers are not loose there is no danger. Asbestos is no longer used in cars, or insulation or ceiling tiles or any other products because it is so dangerous. If these are newer ironing board covers there is no asbestos in there. About 5 years ago here in MN there was a congressman who died of lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure. He worked in old buildings in the east side of Saint Paul, MN and was exposed to asbestos insulation. Once a person has it there is no cure, but based on what you wrote I would not worry about any modern products as asbestos was outlawed a long time ago.

It’s unlikely.
Cats don’t smoke, which greatly increases the likelihood of lung cancer for people who have been exposed to asbestos.
Cats don’t live very long, and are likely to die of other causes well before lung cancer would show up.
But here’s the thing: if your cat has been exposed to asbestos, so have you. Kitty will have carried some fibers home on her fur. I’m more worred about you than the cat. Tell your doctor. You may want to get screened in a decade.

It depends on the kind of asbestos. Some kinds the risk is so low that it is worse to remove it, because of the added risk of stirring it up. I'm assuming you mean mesothelioma, which afflicts about 2-3,000 new people each year in the US (out of all third of a billion of us!), so the actual risk is very, very low. It also tends to be older folks. Of course, none of that helps if it's you, but you should keep the risk in perspective, and remember to wear a seatbelt and not smoke before you worry about spending mega-bucks removing asbestos or buying a new home to get away from it.
Here's some info on prevention:
